Reaching out to minority ethnic carers

Nov 27 2018 · THE CARERS CENTRE (BRISTOL AND SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE)

We are proud to have produced some short films in different community languages to encourage minority ethnic carers to seek support.

We have worked in partnership with local community organisations Dhek Bhal and Bristol and Avon Chinese Women’s Group, who will be using them as a discussion tool in their work and taking them out to religious institutions. They have been made thanks to funding from the BUPA Foundation.

These short films show individual carers talking about their day-to-day lives. They explain that a real barrier to getting help is that many people do not think of themselves as carers, so they do not know that they can get any help or support for themselves. The films aim to address those barriers by providing important information in community languages. They are in Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi and Urdu. Feng cares for her daughter and was interviewed for the Chinese films. She says, “Chinese people don’t know the term ‘carer’ because we naturally look after our family when they get ill. It was my GP who said I’m a carer.”
